Artist in Residence: Susan Stone

On select weekends, local artists are invited to Ocean House to share their artistic vision and give a demonstration of their skills.

Enjoy a wine and cheese reception in the Living Room on Saturday evening from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Throughout the weekend, catch the featured artist in action as the sea air, sweeping views of the Atlantic and more than 140 years of history serve as inspiration for a work of art.

Susan Cole Stone was born in Providence, RI, but grew up drawing and painting in Connecticut, where she also attended Paier College of Art located in New Haven. Susan and lived in Westerly, Rhode Island and had her studio there for over 35 years, relocating to Florida in 2010 for nine years.She found a second home there reveling in the new environment and subject matter, but now divides her time between her beloved Westerly and Melbourne, Florida.

Well known for her attention to detail, particularly in her architectural and wildlife paintings, Susan’s work is in private collections across the country and in such far-flung places such as Australia, Italy and France. Susan is able to render a detailed and accurate architectural drawing or painting from life, from blueprints or even the concept sketched out on a napkin. Her experience extends to illustration, having illustrated many books, publications and many commercial graphics projects. Watercolor is her favorite medium followed closely by pen & ink and colored pencils.  She teaches classes in those mediums and in perspective drawing as well as basic drawing. She says, “I learn as much from my teaching and my students as they do from me.”

Susan is a an Elected Artist member of the Mystic Museum of Art in Mystic Connecticut, a member of Strawbridge Art League in Melbourne, Florida, the Brevard Watercolor Society, and the Brevard Council of the Arts, both of Brevard county, Florida, as well as the Florida Watercolor Society.  She currently teaches at South County Art Association, Avondale Arts, and The Mystic Museum of Art.

Susan was a co-owner and Executive Director of Art Gallery of Viera in Melbourne, Florida for 8 years.
