About the Artisan
Maria Scaglione was raised in both southern Italy and Westerly, Rhode Island. During her time in college, she travelled to northern Italy and apprenticed at a marble-carving studio in a beautiful, historic town called Pietrasanta. While learning to carve stone, she began to seriously pursue photography and the making of photographs. Upon returning to the U.S. from her time abroad, she obtained her M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Maria has been awarded an artist’s grant from the Rhode Island State Council of the Arts and is working on a photo-illustrated cookbook demonstrating the old-world traditions still used by her family.
