Artisan in Residence: Dora Szekely, Jewelry Maker
You’re invited to an introductory jewelry-making class, where you will learn how to make your own metal jewelry pieces with wire and beads. Using cold connections–no soldering or working with flame–you’ll create a unique piece by manipulating silver wire, forming it into shapes, strengthening and polishing it into a simple pair, followed by a the second, more complex pair. This is where you learn the secrets of jewelry design, and how to use the tools required for a professional result. Walk away with two pairs of sterling silver earrings and to keep for yourself or to gift as an exceptional homemade present.
About the Artisan
Dora Szekely was introduced to jewelry making in NYC and began her journey in jewelry design in Italy. Dora honed her craft here in Westerly RI., with designs inspired by countless trips to Napatree Point Beach throughout her life. As the daughter of an award-winning local photographer and well-known Hungarian sculptor, she grew up with a deep love and appreciation for the arts as an innate part of who she is. She began formal silversmith training through an apprenticeship at age thirteen, and eventually started her own business, Dora Szekely designs, creating and selling commercial and art jewelry. Influenced by her undergraduate studies, her focus shifted to include activism- bringing attention to the extractive precious metals industry and working towards direct efforts in changing the environmental and human impact metal mining has.
