Artisan in Residence: Dora Szekely, Jewelry Maker
Enjoy a lovely wine reception with Dora Szekely, jewelry maker, where she will share how there is a story in each piece of jewelry; from the Earth, through its materials, the process of design and creation, through the meaning it creates for the wearer and the generations to come. She will talk about the fundamentals of jewelry making, including jewelry sourcing, design and creating. Dora will also tell stories of her trips to the mines in Cambodia to source gemstones, and how a piece is made through photographs and stories of people, starting from the materials- the mining, the cutting, polishing then the process of designing and handcrafting the jewelry piece to be worn for generations.
About the Artisan
Dora Szekely was introduced to jewelry making in NYC and began her journey in jewelry design in Italy. Dora honed her craft here in Westerly RI., with designs inspired by countless trips to Napatree Point Beach throughout her life. As the daughter of an award-winning local photographer and well-known Hungarian sculptor, she grew up with a deep love and appreciation for the arts as an innate part of who she is. She began formal silversmith training through an apprenticeship at age thirteen, and eventually started her own business, Dora Szekely designs, creating and selling commercial and art jewelry. Influenced by her undergraduate studies, her focus shifted to include activism- bringing attention to the extractive precious metals industry and working towards direct efforts in changing the environmental and human impact metal mining has.
