Learn about the legendary museum itself–a nationally significant example of Colonial Revival architecture, built in 1901 to designs that were the result of a unique collaboration between Theodate Pope Riddle, one of the United States’ first female architects, and the renowned firm of McKim, Mead & White–which now houses four major Monets, three Degas’, two Manets, and much more.
About Stephen Lash: Stephen Lash is Chairman Emeritus of Christie’s Americas and Advisor on the Arts for Ocean House. Lash has served more 40 years at Christies, including his tenure as Chairman, at which time he has been involved with virtually every major historic and record-setting auction at the firm. Mr. Lash serves as acting President and Trustee of the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, and as a Trustee of the Museum of the City of New York and the New York Landmarks Conservancy, where he was Chair for several years. He is current co-Chair of the American Friends of the Israel Museum, for which he served as President for six years. He is on the Board of Stanhope Capital in London, and has served on the Board of the Preservation League of New York State, and the Board of Overseers for and co-Chair of the Maritime Visiting Committee at the Peabody Essex Museum. An avid collector of transatlantic passenger steamship memorabilia, Mr. Lash was the Founder and First President of the Ocean Liner Museum, now part of the South Street Seaport. He holds a B.A. from Yale College, and is a former President of the Association of Yale Alumni of Metropolitan New York. He received an M.B.A. in International Business from Columbia Business School.
About Anna Swinbourne, PhD: Anna Swinbourne, PhD is Executive Director and CEO of Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington, Connecticut. She is also an independent art historian, curator, and educator engaged in a variety of publication, exhibition, and art-market endeavors. Her noteworthy former projects include a collection catalogue for the late David Rockefeller and an exhibition on Paul Cézanne landscapes for Princeton University Art Museum; she has been a Visiting Professor at Trinity College in Hartford and has taught Art History courses at Miss Porter’s School. From 1999 to 2009, Dr. Swinbourne was on the painting and sculpture curatorial staff of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, where she created a two-volume catalogue on the unparalleled Niarchos Collection, and curated – either independently, or with Chief Curators, Kirk Varnedoe and John Elderfield – major exhibitions on the work of Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Édouard Manet, and James Ensor, the last two of which were awarded First Prize for Best Historical Show of the year by the International Art Critics Association (AICA). In 2011, for her service to the Kingdom of Belgium, she was decorated by King Albert II and became a Knight of the Order of the Crown. Prior to joining MoMA, Anna was an Assistant Vice President in the Impressionist and Modern Art Department of Sotheby’s, New York. She was trained at the École du Louvre in Paris, Tufts University (B.A.), and the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University (M.A.; Ph.D.). She is a Trustee of Hill-Stead Museum as well as member of the Board of Managers of Lewis Walpole Library of Yale University and the Art Advisory Committee of King Baudouin Foundation United States.
